In celebration of the Jubilee Year for the Elderly, Monsignor Dr. Patrick Thawale, Parish Priest of Andrea Kaggwa Woyera Parish, engaged with over 40 elderly Catholics on July 26th at the Parish Conference Hall. This meaningful encounter preceded the 8:00 am Mass, specifically dedicated to the elderly, which was attended by over 75 senior citizens on the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
During their meeting, the Parish Priest provided an opportunity for the elderly to share their spiritual and administrative concerns. They reminisced about the Parish’s history, tracing its roots back to 1980 when it was an outstation of St. Francis Parish, and its elevation to a Parish in 1992. The elderly also inquired about the status of the new Church construction, to which Monsignor Thawale responded, “We have plans to expand this Church building to allow more members to participate physically during Mass, particularly the 8:00 am one.”
The 8:00 am Mass on the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time was a vibrant celebration of faith, with the elderly actively participating in readings, announcements, and presenting altar gifts. Gogo Ruth Kumwembe delivered an inspiring talk on the importance of intergenerational relationships, while Mr. James Mughandira shared an oral history of the Parish from 1980 to 2025.
Following the Mass, the Andrea Kaggwa Church Council presented certificates of recognition to the elderly in three categories: Diamond (60-69), Platinum (70-79), and Octogenarian (80 and above). The Church Council Chairperson expressed gratitude to the senior citizens for their dedication to prayer and urged the community to protect and care for their elderly members, acknowledging the vital role they play in the Parish.
This Jubilee celebration not only honored the elderly but also highlighted the importance of respecting and supporting them within the community.
